491 visa granted for our family of four — three onshore and one offshore. Occupation: Hotel Manager / General Manager Stream: Non-priority Education: Overseas studies (not Australia) Points: 65 Age: Over the cut-off Category: Green Nominated State: Tasmania And still… we made it. Alhamdulillah. Initially, my husband was meant to be the main applicant since he studied in Australia. But when COVID hit, he became seriously ill with TB and was hospitalised. Surprisingly, TB treatment in Australia is free. We were extremely worried this might affect our visa status, but it didn’t. Instead, we remained on a bridging visa for a long time until he was finally discharged. Side note: make sure you keep very thorough documentation of all TB treatments. Every time you undergo a medical check-up, you’ll be required to submit your discharge records and X-ray proof as part of your health declaration. Soon after, our 485 visa was granted. From that point on, everything changed — and somehow, I ended up becoming the main applicant and later applied for the 408 visa. Life truly turned the tables on us. Being separated from our minor son was heartbreaking, and the long wait was mentally exhausting. But despite everything, it finally worked out in the end. Long story short, after my skills assessment, I took things slowly because I was considering the 494 visa offered by my company. Honestly, I also kept procrastinating because I wasn’t ready to sit for the English test. Who else can relate? 😅 However, when pressure and unrealistic expectations from my company started piling up in January 2024, I realised I needed to take control of my own future. I wasn’t even sure I could survive the 494 pathway, especially with its three-year commitment. So I chose independence: I sat for the English test and applied for the 491 visa instead. Yes, the 494 could have been processed in as little as six months, while the 491 takes around 20–27 months — that was the trade-off. In the end, I stayed with my company and survived anyway. Maybe I could have completed the three years, but at that time, everything felt too uncertain and unpredictable. Don’t give up, everyone. I’ve documented my full story and timeline in detail — if I can make it, so can you. ✨ I know my journey is long, but I’m more than happy to answer questions and share whatever I can. I understand the feeling of being in limbo — waiting for an invite, waiting for a grant. My advice for employment evidence is if the files/document are too big, just separate them per company. Because what I did when I lodged was I uploaded it on Google drive and upload a single document containing the link, which I think was the reason for my s56.
