Trends and Patterns in S56 Requests

Priority occupations (Health and Teaching) continue to demonstrate expedited processing times. Multiple Registered Nurses and Teachers received grants within 21-30 days of lodgement, with most being direct grants requiring no S56 requests.

For non-priority occupations, processing times vary significantly. The Geotechnical Engineer (189) experienced a 14.7-month processing period, while the Construction Project Manager (491 NSW) processed in 6.7 months. Early Childhood Teachers, classified as priority, received grants in approximately 5.4 months.

S56 requests on 19 February 2026 focused on Polio vaccination requirements for offshore 491 applicants who lodged in July 2025, and employment evidence for a 190 offshore applicant from May 2025. Medical requests remain common, with several applicants receiving S56s for medicals or remedicals between January and February 2026.

VIC 190 continues to show strong activity for health professionals, with multiple Registered Nurses receiving grants within one month of lodgement. QLD 190 also demonstrated efficient processing for health occupations, with one RN Aged Care case processing in 7.6 months despite two S56 requests.

Trends and Patterns in S56 Requests

S56 requests continue to focus on standard documentation requirements. Medical-related requests remain common, including polio vaccination certificates and remedicals. Police clearance certificates (PCC and AFP checks) are frequently requested, particularly for applications lodged several months ago. Health undertakings and form corrections (Form 1023) were also observed. Partner English proficiency documentation (PTE) was requested in one case. The timing of S56 requests varies significantly, from a few weeks to over a year after visa lodgement.

Priority occupations (Health and Teaching) continue to demonstrate faster processing times compared to non-priority occupations. Several health professionals received grants within 1-3 months of lodgement, while non-priority occupations showed processing times ranging from 8-27 months. The 491 TAS Software Engineer case showed an exceptionally long processing time of 27 months, though this included a remedicals request.

Queensland conducted a preinvite round on 18 February 2026, targeting various occupations across both 190 and 491 streams. Points ranged from 65 to 100+5, with health professionals and engineers featuring prominently. Victoria issued a full invite for a Civil Engineer with 90 points on the same day.

Update NT Nomination Processing โ€“ February 2026

We provide below indicative processing timeframes by category for your guidance only (please keep in mind, the NT nomination application portal opened on 24 November 2025 for the 2025/26 program year, and we received a large volume of applications on this date):

Onshore Applicants

  • NT Graduate Stream โ€“ currently processing applications lodged on 24 November 2025.
  • NT Resident Stream โ€“ all applications are under assessment

Offshore Applicants

  • NT Family Stream โ€“ currently processing applications lodged before 20 January 2026.
  • Priority Occupation Stream โ€“ currently processing applications lodged on 24 November 2025

Priority Processing Requests

MigrationNT generally assesses applications in order of receipt within streams. However, priority is given to eligible applicants who are currently employed onshore in the Northern Territory, working in their nominated occupation or a closely related skilled occupation. Priority processing may also be considered where:

  • an applicant is living in the NT and has an imminent visa expiry date within the next 30 days.
  • an applicant turns 45 within the next 30 days, or
  • an applicant will lose migration points (due to change in age) to below 65 points within the next 30 days, making them ineligible for a subclass 491 nomination.

If any of the above deadlines apply within the next 30 days, please email migration@nt.gov.au with evidence of the urgency. Whilst priority processing may be afforded, we cannot guarantee nomination outcomes prior to any deadlines and would recommend you seek professional advice from a Registered Migration Agent or Legal Practitioner if required.

Trends and Patterns in S56 Requests

S56 requests continue to focus on standard documentation requirements. Four S56 requests were reported for 17 February 2026, all for Subclass 190 applications lodged in November 2024. Common requests include:

Medical Documentation: Two applicants received requests for medical examinations or remedicals, consistent with standard processing requirements for applications where medicals have expired (over 12 months old).

Police Clearance Certificates: Three of the four S56 requests included PCC requirements. One offshore applicant from Pakistan was specifically asked for police certificates showing all cities of residence within their home country. Another onshore applicant noted that additional attestation was required for their country of origin.

Employment Evidence: Two requests included employment-related documentation, with one specifically requesting evidence of Australian employment.

The S56 requests align with typical visa processing requirements and do not indicate any unusual patterns. All requests were issued for applications lodged approximately three months prior, suggesting these are part of routine case officer assessments rather than delayed processing.

No external resources were referenced in today's comments.

News and Updates

NT 491 Invitation Activity: One invitation was issued for Chef occupation at 90 points on 17 February 2026. The applicant had submitted their ROI on 06 January 2026 and signed the declaration form on 06 February 2026, indicating a processing time of approximately 6 weeks from ROI to invitation.

Trends and Patterns in S56 Requests

Priority occupations (Health and Teaching) continue to demonstrate expedited processing. The General Practitioner case received a direct grant in approximately 2 months, while the Physiotherapist and Registered Nurse cases were processed in approximately 8 months and 5 months respectively.

Non-priority occupations show more varied processing times. The Mechanical Engineer (NSW 190) was processed in approximately 8 months, while the Software Engineer (NSW 190) took approximately 9 months. The Architectural Draftsperson (NSW 491) was processed in approximately 8 months.

S56 requests observed today primarily relate to vaccination certificates (Polio) and remedicals for family members. One case involved multiple S56 requests over several months, including travel history documentation and Form 80. The Software Engineer case received an S56 for child medicals despite the child being under two years old at initial medical examination.

Several cases reported direct grants with no S56 requests, particularly in priority occupations. The presence of a skilled partner in priority occupations appears to correlate with faster processing times.

190 OFFSHORE Fitter General Dec 2024 13 Feb 2026 Form 80
190 OFFSHORE Unknown 10 May 2025 13 Feb 2026 NZ PCC

Trends and Patterns in S56 Requests

S56 requests continue to be issued for various document types including Police Clearance Certificates (PCC), Form 80, AFP checks, and medical examinations. The requests appear across all three visa subclasses (189, 190, 491) and affect both onshore and offshore applicants. Notably, remedicals and Form 80 requests remain common, particularly for applications lodged in late 2024 and early 2025.

Priority occupations (Registered Nurses) demonstrated significantly faster processing times, with one QLD 190 case processed in just 4 days and another 189 case processed in approximately 5 months. Non-priority occupations showed more varied processing times, ranging from approximately 8 months to over 2 years for one ACT 491 case that received multiple S56 requests.

The ACT 491 case lodged in October 2023 experienced an extended processing time of over 2 years with two S56 requests, highlighting the variability in processing times for non-priority occupations. In contrast, the NSW 190 Fitter General case received a direct grant without any S56 requests after approximately 9 months.

Trends and Patterns in S56 Requests

Priority occupations (Registered Nurses and Early Childhood Teachers) demonstrated expedited processing with grants issued within 2-3 months of lodgement. The NT 190 ECT grant was particularly swift at 7 days from lodgement to grant with no S56 requests.

Non-priority occupations experienced longer processing times. The NSW 491 Software Engineer case took 24 months with three separate S56 requests (PCC, remedicals, and Form 815 health undertaking). The QLD 190 Fitter and Turner case took approximately 11.5 months. Proactive engagement with DHA and submission of supporting documents (employment contracts, financial evidence, school documentation) appeared beneficial in one case.

S56 requests predominantly involved medical examinations (remedicals), police clearance certificates, partner functional English requirements, and VAC payments. Multiple S56 requests were common for non-priority occupations, with medical clearances taking 1-4 weeks to process after submission.

Family size ranged from single applicants to families of 4, with no apparent correlation to processing times. Both onshore and offshore applicants received grants, though priority occupations showed faster processing regardless of location.

Non-Priority Occupations: Engineers, Carpenters, and other non-priority occupations experienced significantly longer processing times, ranging from 9 months to over 2 years. The longest processing time observed was 2 years 2 months 14 days for a QLD 190 Mechanical Engineer (offshore).

S56 Patterns: The most common S56 requests were for: - Remedicals: Frequently requested after 12-18 months from initial medicals, particularly for applications lodged in 2023-2024 - Polio Certificates: Multiple requests observed, particularly for VIC and NSW applications - Police Clearance Certificates (PCC): Requested for applications with extended processing times - Parental Consent: Required for applicants with dependent children from previous relationships - Partner Medicals: Requested separately in some cases

Direct Grants: Two SA 190 applications (Carpenter and Production/Plant Engineer) received direct grants without S56 requests, both offshore applications with processing times of 9-10 months.

Family Size Impact: Family sizes ranged from single applicants to families of 6. No clear correlation between family size and processing time was evident from this dataset.

These patterns suggest varying processing timelines based on individual case circumstances and completeness of initial documentation.

For visa processing times, the 491 NSW Analyst Programmer case was processed in approximately 7 months with one S56 request. The 190 cases showed processing times ranging from approximately 9-10 months. The 189 cases for trades occupations (Carpenter and Wall and Floor Tiler) were processed in approximately 5 months, demonstrating relatively faster processing for these occupations.

NSW continues to show strong nomination activity with full invites issued for Early Childhood Teachers (priority occupation) and Software Engineers. VIC also issued a full invite for Software Engineer with 100 points.

Subclass State Occupation Points Date Details
190 VIC ICT Business Analyst 95 03 Feb 2026 State Nomination Approval

4. Trends and Patterns in S56 Requests

The majority of S56 requests issued on 03 February 2026 were for medical examinations, including polio vaccinations. This pattern is consistent with recent trends where health-related documentation remains the primary reason for further information requests. Notably, S56 requests for polio certificates were issued to both onshore and offshore applicants across Subclass 189 and 190 visas.

For non-priority occupations (Software Engineers, Civil Engineers, ICT Business Analysts), visa processing times ranged from approximately 10 to 14 months. Priority occupations such as Physiotherapist demonstrated faster processing at approximately 10 months despite being offshore. Trade occupations (Gas Fitter, Plumber) processed in approximately 9 months.

VIC 190 grants dominated today's activity, with multiple Software Engineers receiving grants after S56 requests for medicals in late January 2026. The processing time for VIC 190 applications lodged in late 2024 and early 2025 appears to be between 10-14 months for non-priority occupations.

One applicant reported successfully requesting expedited processing due to employment and financial circumstances, receiving an S56 for medicals 10 days after contact with the department, followed by a grant 3 days after medical completion.

Trends and Patterns

Visa Processing Times: Priority occupations (Health and Teaching) continue to demonstrate expedited processing. The 491 VIC Secondary Teacher grant was processed in 24 days, while the two 189 RN NEC grants took approximately 46 days. Non-priority occupations show significantly longer processing times, with the 491 ACT Surveyor taking 28 months and the 190 NSW Fitter General taking 11 months.

S56 Requests: Medical examinations remain the most common S56 request. Multiple S56 requests were issued for the Health and Safety Advisor case (three separate requests in January 2026). The ACT Surveyor case received remedicals and employment verification requests after a lengthy processing period.

SA Invitation Round: South Australia conducted a substantial invitation round on 02 February 2026, covering both 190 and 491 visas across diverse occupations. Points ranged from 65 to 100 (inclusive of state points). Several applicants who applied for 190 were offered 491 instead. SA continues to prioritise graduates and candidates with higher salaries and local work experience.

NSW Pathway 3: NSW 491 Pathway 3 processing remains efficient, with the Mechanical Engineering nomination approved within two weeks of application submission.

๐Ÿ”ต This data represents a subset of total visa and invitation activity. Only the Department of Home Affairs and individual states possess complete datasets. For invitation rounds, this summary reflects crowdsourced comments; states hold comprehensive round data.
