Hi all. I submitted an EOI for Civil Engineer (233211) on...
@mohitg (19H ago| Updated 19H ago)Hi all. I submitted an EOI for Civil Engineer (233211) on 28th February 2025. I had chosen all the three subclasses (189, 190 and 491) in a single EOI. I have enough points to clear the requirement for subclass 189. I received full invite from NSW on 8th April. Since I don't have enough finances to file both 189 and 190, I have decided to let the 190 invite expire. My questions are: 1. What happens if I receive another 190 invite from some other state, resulting in a total of 2 invites? Will my EOI be cancelled if I don't accept it? 2. Can I withdraw only subclasses 190 and 491 from my EOI, leaving only 189? 3. Or should I file a separate, second EOI only for the subclass 189? I have about 10 days before the invite from NSW is cancelled.

190 is also PR. I hope you will not regret letting that precious 190 invitation go if you'll not get invited for 189. Remember that Civil Engineers were not on the priority list and changes might happen by the new FY.
Firstly do not put one EOI, follow this
- Submit multiple EOIs as above.
- Yes you can, but better to do (1)
- Follow (1)
You can leave 189 in current EOI, dont change it (assuming you are going to let 190 expire, which is probably a bad idea). Then, you can put new EOIs for the rest as per formula in FAQ linked above.
Firstly, thank you @gregormendel for the quick reply. Can you please explain why letting 190 invite expire is a bad idea? Here are my justifications:
-
The cut-off score for Civil Engineer was 85 in the September 2024 invitation round. In the November 2024 round it was even lower at 85. My points are 90 (for subclass 189). This means there is a high chance that I will get a subclass 189 invite.

The visa processing times for subclass 190 is about 18-21 months. While that for subclass 189 is about 4 months.

If I get subclass 189 invite after submitting subclass 190 application, I won't be able to get back the application fees, which is approximately worth 3 months of my salary. So it would be a huge financial loss for me.
Let me know if I am wrong anywhere, since this is very important and I don't want to make a huge mistake simply because I didn't understand the processΒ wellΒ enough.
Btw, I realised all of the above after I had already spent AUD 330 on the 190 invite.
because new FY can bring about new things/changes. I hope no points systems changes etc before next round. Your score is good, so its upto you if you want skip 190 and aim for 189.
Thanks for the help. I will skip the 190 then. But I am unable to find an option to withdraw the 190 and 491 subclasses. Maybe i need to wait for the invite to expire before i cam do it.

NSW will never invite you again since they already invited you.. They only invite once. Besides no one know if there will be 189 round or how much allocation for 189 next FY. the cutoff is not static. Just like you there maybe others with 100 over points and no guarantee you will be invited, Think carefully before wasting away the golden opportunity.
- "NSW will never invite you again since they already invited you" I understand what you guys are saying. I really do. But, doesn't that work only for THIS particular EOI? Consider this hypothetical scenario: What if I withdraw 190 and 491 from my current EOI and submit separate EOIs for 190 as per the link provided by Gregor. Won't NSW invite me for that EOI since it is a different one?
- "Just like you there maybe others with 100 over points and no guarantee you will be invited" In the last invitation round, the cut-off score was 85. Doesn't that mean that applicants above 100 score were few and far between? Which is why they HAD to select applicants with 85 score? I acknowledge that there might new applicants SINCE the last round who might have score of more than 90. Again, I am saying all of this as per the best of my knowledge, and I invite you to please correct me if I am wrong somewhere.
Since you paid the application fee and submitted the documents and received invite you are in their database forever. Even if you launch several new EOI's you are automatically excluded because you were already invited. That is how it works for NSW.
