Western Australia opens pathway to permanent residency for skilled workers in 331 occupations

Western Australia has made some exciting changes to its skilled migration program.

As per a recent update regarding the 2022-23 migration program, Western Australia has announced that it will accept applications from overseas skilled migrants and the number of occupations available in the Graduate stream will be increased to over 330 occupations.

Key updates:

  • Western Australia announces new initiatives to attract foreign workers and students.
  • People residing overseas are now eligible to be considered for Western Australia (WA) State nomination.
  • WA expands occupations available in the Graduate stream to more than 330 occupations.
  • Invitations to apply for WA State nomination will be via the ranking system, giving preference to applicants currently residing in Western Australia, followed by those residing in rest of Australia and then those residing overseas.

Candidates may be nominated by the West Australian government under two streams:

  • General
  • Graduate

Process for all candidates

  • Candidates need to submit an Express of Interest (EOI) on the Department of Home Affairs Skills Select portal to indicate whether the candidate is seeking either nomination from Western Australia or any other state or territory.

  • Meet the Department of Home Affairs eligibility for the Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190) or the Skilled Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491).

  • There is a minimum points requirement to receive an invitation for a visa and the current pass mark is 65 points.

  • Please note that not all applicants meeting the minimum points threshold will receive an invitation to apply for a visa. Moreover, an invitation to apply for State nomination does not guarantee nomination.

  • 1f an invitation has been received, the candidate will have upto 28 days to apply for the visa.

Expressions of Interest (EOIs) are prioritised in the following order:

  • Candidates residing in Western Australia receive first priority.
  • Candidates residing in rest of Australia receive second priority.
  • Candidates residing overseas receive third priority.

Invitations to apply for the State nomination General Stream ranked by EOI points score, will be issued subject to :

  • candidate meeting the General stream minimum requirements
  • occupation ceilings
  • candidate meeting the pass mark of Department of Home Affairs points test

Invitations to apply for the State nomination Graduate Stream ranked by EOI points score, will be issued subject to :

  • candidate meeting the Graduate stream minimum requirements
  • occupation ceilings
  • canidate meeting the pass mark of Department of Home Affairs points test
  • nomination ceilings for university/higher education graduates and vocational education and training (VET) graduates
