Usually no, medicals expire after 12 months, but there is legislation on the exact conditions as to when medicals are re-requested. I cant recall right now, not on computer. Anyways, you should work with baseline assumption that if medicals expire you will be requested to redo them.

Hello, can someone help me? Civil Engineer here (90 points for SC 189). In the November 2024 round, the cut-off points were 85. I submitted my EOI on 27 Feb. Then 190 NSW Pre-invite on 25 Mar. Today I received 190 NSW approval. If I submit the 190 Visa application and pay the complete fees, and I get invite for 189 in the next round (let's say in June), can I submit 189 Visa application without losing the 190 fees?

You will need to pay visa fee twice.

the fee you paid for 190 has nothing to do with 189. If you get 189 invite, you will need to pay fee again for 189 visa application

Oh that's a shame. I guess I need to be brave and I trust myself that I can get the 189 invite. I really cant afford paying 4770 AUD twice. Thanks

Hi Gregor , I have submitted nomination application for WA The EOI which I got invited was created for SA and I updated that one year back to WA , but I was in SA because of my job and I came to WA in last December and I updated the same EOI to WA . After two months I got invited and I provided enough documents while submitting application. they are granted throughout the day, but I wont be surprised if the COs are a bit more "energetic" in the morning

Hi. Do you know why have they been dealing with cases of Dec. 23 and Jan. 24 recently, but not the thousands of backlogs from June 23?

I think they might have a way to determine "readiness for grant" so when needed, they can drop a few grants here and there. Obvious things like expired docs, family size, location etc.

many sort of things slowdown near elections, because it could be a govt change

the key bit is: they grant as per planning levels, so it doesnt matter is they slow down or speed up a bit

Why are most visa granted from engineering and IT sector only?

@gregormendel mate I may have a silly question. What would happen if the planning level of 189 this FY is used up? Are they gonna hold the 189 granting for the next 3 months until the next FY?

Once the 189 planning level for this FY is reached, remaining applicants will have to wait until next FY and the new planning level to be processed. From my understanding, the department doesn't really like to use the entire planning level too early and will slow down visa grants as we approach the end of the current FY (i.e. they probably won't use all of the remaining allocation in April - which is feasible given the remaining number, but will spread the remaining allocation over April, May, and June). This means we will probably see a smaller number of 189 visa grants over the next few months until we reach the new FY.

Hey @greg, I have submitted EOIs for 491/190 for NSW and Victoria. But have very low points. Now I want to try student visa (500). Only the ROI has passport number linked which can be traced, not the EOIs. Even if I withdraw the ROI and EOIs now, can they still refuse my student visa stating "I am not a genuine student as I tried 491/190 previously?"

Waiting in hope for my visa application already being picked up by DHA. Submitted on 29th Jan 2024. Do the states have any say on the DHA processing? Like can Victoria or NSW ask DHA to prioritise certain occupations?

Never heard or read anything around it. Assume this doesnt happen. VIC and NSW usually account for 40% to 50% of allocation so natural to every second grant from VIC or NSW on average

I wont be surprised though, if there was a mechanism for states to be able to request DHA for certain occupations to be expedited, for example certain specific ones in regional areas etc. Just speculating, I dont know for sure.

just a quick suggestion, based on statistics, the estimated grant date can be updated for the applicants once they update their status mentioning they have provided the information in s56 request

grants will continue for some time because still have planning level

Happy to be corrected by @gregormendel, but I have the vague recollection from previous years that the department doesn't really like to use the entire planning level too early. Rather than continue at the same pace and quickly exhaust the remaining allocation, as they near the planning level they will slow down visa processing to stretch it out to closer to the end of the FY. In practice, this would mean fewer grants each month from now until June, leading to some very quiet days.

There's also the potential that 189 grants still occurred on April 10th and 11th, but a smaller number that crowdsourcing did not capture just due to sampling error.

@Cole, spot on, the "pace of grants" is continually adjusted with the aim of using up planning level by the end of FY. and yes even if you see nothing on SmartVisaGuide for a particular day, it doesnt necessarily mean no grants "out there", it usually just means a quiet day, but there could still be some grants out there. We capture between 5% to 10% of total grants out there. Lastly, sometime we see grants, but the data is not complete (state, dates, subclass etc.) is missing so we can not enter into our database as it wont line up well. In this case we skip entering it in database.

March end FOI data should come in 2 weeks or so. FOI data is best for these extrapolations. You can do trending/charting/extrapolation with excel to get a decent idea of these things. I make an excel file available here with raw FOI data See link →

Hi Gregor. I am living in WA and my work is related to IT - work from home. Can I apply for 189 or 491 from WA, although my office/employer is based in Sydney CBD. My employer is not willing to give me remote work ref letter. Will there be any problem related to my work As I am living in WA and working from home where office/employer based in Sydney. Because it will be visible on my payslips and ATO statements that my work is based in SYDNEY. Any suggestions please Thank you

189 and 491WA dont require that you work for an employer based in WA, so no issues. But after grant, you will need these letters as 491 is "live and work in DRA"

Umair, yes, t seems there has been fewer ME invites this FY. But this is not just ME, it's a theme across some core STEM type occupations. We can just hope that in coming FY that they can focus more on experienced ICT/Engineers. Your profile is good for 190, so lets hope for best for next FY. Another 5 pts would put you in better position for 189

If you are claiming 0 pts, then choose an appropriate explanation for 0 pts in drop-down for partner points explanation. There is one of the options in dropdown that fits. The reason its doesnt default to assuming what 0 means is: there are plenty of people who dont bother to complete their pts profile, and just leave partner pts untouched default at 0. So this selection forces them to consciously state that they have 0 pts and chose the going explanation .

Kamil, good profile for 189, try to keep an EOI in, so its a bit old by the time next round comes. Your partner has a good occupation, so put another set of EOIs with partner as primary occupation. Invite should come your (or partner's) way
